The Unaffiliated Research Record

A Public Evidence Ledger for Independent Research Achievement

Proposed Category: Most DOI-Registered Research Outputs Produced by an Unaffiliated Independent Researcher Within One Calendar Year

Research is one of humanity's most important activities. Yet there is currently no widely recognized world-record category measuring high-volume research output generated without institutional funding, university affiliation, dedicated research staff, or proprietary research infrastructure.

Purpose

This repository exists to document a measurable form of intellectual achievement that currently lacks dedicated recognition within major world-record frameworks.

Independent research is conducted worldwide by inventors, farmers, citizen scientists, open-source contributors, self-funded scholars, and unaffiliated researchers. Knowledge creation is not exclusive to universities or corporations.

The objective of this project is to demonstrate that independent research output can be:

Documented Example

158
DOI Registrations in 2025
0
Institutional Grants
0
Research Staff
1
Independent Research Author

Core Characteristics

Measurable
Verifiable
Publicly Documented
Challengeable
Breakable

The proposed category is based on publicly verifiable DOI registrations and transparent authorship records. Any future participant meeting the same conditions could theoretically exceed the documented benchmark.

Research Environment Comparison

Factor Institutional Research Independent Research
Funding University, grants, corporate support Self-funded
Infrastructure Institutional resources Open-access resources
Research Staff Teams and assistants Individual effort
Verification Institutional records DOIs and public repositories
Recognition Established frameworks No dedicated category

Current Status

On 20 April 2026, a proposal was submitted to Guinness World Records for consideration of a new category:

"Unaffiliated Independent Researcher with Most DOIs in a Year"

The proposal proceeded to a detailed evaluation stage involving questions related to measurability, achievability, verifiability, and breakability.

This ledger serves as a permanent public archive documenting the rationale for recognizing independent research output as a measurable category of human achievement.
